Carrie Wisman’s collegiate debut could be classified as a success.

The Virginia High graduate made her first appearance for the nationally-ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team on Sept. 13.

Playing 9 minutes, 43 seconds at goalkeeper, the freshman helped preserve Virginia’s 4-0 shutout of Seton Hall.

McCoy reaches end zone
Larry McCoy’s first collegiate touchdown came in dramatic fashion.

The former George Wythe High School star and current running back at Duquesne University ripped off a 67-yard TD run 20 seconds into the game on Saturday afternoon in the Dukes’ 24-17 loss to Dayton.

On Duquesne’s first play from scrimmage, McCoy took a handoff from quarterback Connor Dixon and sped past the Dayton defense.

McCoy finished with 118 yards on 14 carries. McCoy, a redshirt freshman, has gained 382 yards on 72 carries this season and leads Duquesne in rushing.

McKinney makes more tackles
Virginia Military Institute defensive end Patrick McKinney (Powell Valley) tested his skills against the nation’s top FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) team on Saturday.

McKinney assisted on three tackles in VMI’s 38-28 loss to defending FCS champion Richmond. A 6-foot-3, 245-pound senior, McKinney has been in on nine stops this season for VMI.

Graves wins race
Just like he did during an outstanding career at Abingdon High School, Griff Graves is still winning races.

The Syracuse University sophomore was victorious at the Colgate Invitational on Sept. 19 in Hamilton, N.Y. Graves won the men’s 8K race in 25:06, crossing the finish line one
second ahead of teammate Tito Medrano.

Harris helps Union
A pair of local players are currently playing volleyball at Union (Ky.) College.

Katie Harris (Sullivan East) has played in five matches for the Bulldogs and recorded 16 digs. Meanwhile, freshman Caity Merritt (Abingdon) is in the midst of a redshirt season.

Biggs makes big impact
It didn’t take long for Emily Biggs to make a big impact for the Milligan College softball team.

Biggs, who played at John Battle and Dobyns-Bennett, scored the winning run for Milligan on Sept. 20 in the Buffaloes’ 2-1 victory over Walters State (Tenn.) Community College in the Milligan Fall Classic.

Biggs raced home on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.

Tranum Transfers
After two seasons as a member of the South Carolina-Upstate women’s basketball team, former Tennessee High standout Tara Tranum has transferred to Columbus (Ga.) State University.

Tranum appeared in 26 games during her two seasons at USC-Upstate, totaling 25 points and 16 rebounds in her time with the Atlantic Sun Conference school.

The 6-foot-1 Tranum is expected to bring a strong post presence to Columbus State.
