BRIEFS: King College, Emory & Henry Volleyball Teams Earn Two Victories

BRISTOL, Tenn. Former Abingdon High School star Rachel Harding had a productive day for the King College volleyball team as the Tornado won two matches on Saturday.

Harding had 14 digs as King collected a 25-19, 25-17, 26-28, 25-21 victory over Covenant. She followed that up with a seven-dig, two-ace performance in the Tornado’s convincing 25-7, 25-10, 25-20 victory over Johnson Bible College.

Sarah Van Goethem had 20 kills on the day for King, while Shannon Earwood dished out 53 assists in the two matches.

Morgan Machen added 10 kills in the win over Covenant, while Whitney Turner slammed down 10 kills against Johnson Bible.King (12-2) is ranked second nationally in the latest National Christian
College Athletic Association Division I poll. The Tornado are second behind Ohio’s Mount Veron Nazarene University.

E&H 3, Va. Intermont 1
E&H 3, Covenant 0

Emory & Henry College improved to 11-3 after sweeping a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday.

E&H posted a 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 30-28 victory over regional rival Virginia Intermont as Rachel Fertitta slammed down 21 kills and made seven blocks.

Reagan Clarke (26 assists) and Samantha Lucado (13 digs) also played well for the Wasps.

E&H followed that up with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Covenant. Fertitta (13 kills) and Clarke (28 assists) once again led the way, while Twyla Sessor contributed 12 digs.

Milligan 3, Tenn. Wesleyan 0
Freshman Chelsea Spivey had 26 assists and five digs as Milligan College cruised to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over visiting Tennessee Wesleyan.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
King 2, Bryan 1
Former Tennessee High star Jena Rickard scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner as King College collected a win over Bryan on Saturday in a match played in steady rainfall.
Rickard scored in the first half to give King (6-3) an early lead and then assisted on freshman Morgan Shelton’s goal in the 81st minute to seal the match.
King goalkeeper Lauren Fritts made four saves. Liz Ponto scored Bryan’s lone goal.

CROSS COUNTRY
Locals compete in Roanoke meet
Runners from Emory & Henry and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise competed in Saturday’s Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke College.

E&H placed fifth in the men’s race as Jeff Casassa (5th) and Keran Billand (23rd) led the Wasps in the 8K race. Spencer Adams placed 13th to lead the UVa.-Wise men.

In the women’s race, UVa.-Wise placed seventh and was led by Mary Katherine Phipps’ 16th place finish and time of 26:58.38 in the 6K event. Former Pound High School star Kayla Balthis added a 29th-place showing (28:47.47) for UVa.-Wise.

Madison Hillard was the top runner for Emory & Henry, placing 49th in 33:01.60
