BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — Sullivan Central senior Kara Mann had 13 kills as the Cougars posted a 17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 Big Eight Conference volleyball victory over Tennessee High.
Briana Cox and Jacquelyn Kestner added nine kills apiece for Central (13-8, 5-2), while Madie Phillippie dished out 38 assists.
Northwood 3, Virginia High 1
Kelsee Smith had 20 assists and 13 kills as Northwood continued to roll with a 25-17, 17-25, 26-24, 26-24 non-district road win over Virginia High.
Kristin Dean added 12 kills and 16 digs for Northwood, while sophomore Chelsey Cardwell racked up 10 blocks and eight kills.
Lydia Hayes led VHS with 23 digs and 21 assists, while Logan Luttrell (16 digs, four kills), Taylor Edmondson (nine kills) and Kendra Smith (12 digs, six kills) were also strong in defeat for the Bearcats.
Abingdon 3, Tazewell 2
Abingdon earned a hard-fought 25-16, 13-25, 25-21, 12-25, 15-12 Southwest District win over Tazewell thanks to 13 kills, six digs and three aces from Taylor Leland.
Lynsi Viers added 16 digs for Abingdon, while Kaitlin Pruitt dished out 24 assists.
Castlewood 3, Honaker 1
Ali Ring had 12 kills and four blocks as Castlewood dispatched Russell County rival Honaker, 12-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-11.
Haley Gilbert added 10 kills for Castlewood, while Kristin Johnson supplied 19 assists for the Blue Devils.
Leanna Meade had 15 service points for Honaker.
Powell Valley 3, Coeburn 2
Behind 23 kills and 15 digs from Tasha Trent, Powell Valley powered its way to a 20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 15-8 non-district road win.
Kaylla Holdway added 13 kills and 10 digs for the Vikings, while Cassie Sturgill dished out 53 assists.
Kala Morgan (11 kills) and Lindsay Lawson (10 kills) led Coeburn at the net, while Catherine Nixon finished with 12 digs and Samantha Cole contributed 19 service points.
John Battle 3, Holston 1
Freshman Kendra Leonard had 33 assists and eight digs as John Battle collected a 25-10, 23-25, 25-8, 25-15 non-district win over Holston.
Sophomore Emily Smith added 13 service points and six digs, while Kaycee Crusenberry (11 service points), Abby Davis (13 digs, four aces), Meghan Corns (11 kills) and Kelsey Griffitts (25 kills) also played well for the Trojans.
Sullivan East 3, Elizabethton 0
Tiffany Baines slammed down nine kills and Sullivan East cruised to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-9 victory over Elizabethton.
Kelsey Moyher added eight kills for East (10-9), which is 3-0 in Three Rivers Conference play. Lindsay Loudermilk served five aces for the Patriots, who are under the direction of first-year head coach Julia Rafalowski.
Carroll County 3, Richlands 0
Kim Marshall had 16 service points, eight assists and two service aces as Carroll County improved to 6-1 with a 25-11, 25-12, 25-15 Southwest District victory.
Maleah Neely added nine kills and assists for the Cavaliers, while Leslie Davidson notched six kills in the win.
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Mountain State 3, UVa.-Wise 1
Homestanding Mountain State University posted a 16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 victory over the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Senior defensive specialist Ruth Hoover had 13 digs and a service ace for UVa.-Wise (2-7), while Mikaela Anders had 11 kills, six blocks, nine digs and two service aces.
Former J.J. Kelly High School standout Samantha Brummette added seven assists, while Lebanon graduate Kaitlyn Collins added three kills and three blocks in the loss.
King 3, Milligan 0
King College rolled to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 victory over former Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Milligan.
Former Tennessee High standout Kalyn Perrigan led Milligan with nine kills.
Union (Ky.) 3, Va. Intermont 0
Monica Moreland had 30 assists and 11 digs in leading Union (Ky.) Collgee to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-21 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over Virginia Intermont.
VI fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the AAC.
Fertitta earns honor
One day after being named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week, Emory & Henry College sophomore Rachel Fertitta has been selected as the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week.
Fertitta earned MVP honors at last week’s E&H tournament and had double-digit kills in each of the Wasps’ four matches. She is the first E&H volleyball player to earn the award.
GOLF
Talley leads Tusculum
Former Virginia High standout David Talley had a nice showing for Tusculum College at the Anderson University Invitational this week at Cobb’s Glen Golf Course in Anderson, S.C.
Talley finished tied for sixth in the individual standouts after shooting a two-round total of 148. He shot a 74 each day in the tourney and was four shots behind tournament champ Brad Caldwell of North Greenville University.
Tusculum finished fifth in the team standings.
