PREP ROUNDUP: J.I. Burton washes away Clintwood Greenwave

NORTON, Va.Martinez Miles ran for 171 yards and one score and Jansen Bates threw for two touchdowns as the J.I. Burton Raiders hammered the Clintwood Greenwave, 36-0, in Lonesome Pine District play on Friday night.

Burton’s defense, which got a score from Logan Mullins’ 40-yard interception return and three interceptions, pitched its fifth straight shutout.

Up next for Burton (8-1, 4-1 Lonesome Pine) is a home date with JJ Kelly next week.

Marion 14, Lebanon 7
Jacob Reeves returned a fumble 15 yards for a score with 2:30 remaining, lifting Marion to a non-district road win over Lebanon.
Marion’s defense shined in the win, holding Lebanon’s potent offense to just 36 rushing yards and taking advantage of three fumbles.
Matt Noe also scored a touchdown for Marion.

J.J. Kelly 62, Appalachia 6
In Appalachia, Va., Lucas Kerns ran for 101 yards and three scores and Alex McArthur added 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Indians hammered the Bulldogs.
Tyler Hall led Appalachia with 106 yards and a score.

Graham 25, Abingdon 22
Abingdon let a late lead slip away in dropping a Southwest District game to visiting Graham.
The Falcons (3-6, 1-4) led 22-12 with 10:05 remaining, before Graham (3-6, 3-2) pieced together a comeback behind two touchdown passes from David Marrs to Torren Byrd. The final score came with 1:20 left and secured the win for the G-Men.
Zac Crosswhite led Abingdon with 115 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.

St. Paul 48, Rye Cove 16
Denver Fritz gained 122 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead St. Paul to a blowout win over Cumberland District foe Rye Cove.

St. Paul quarterback Tyler Phillips threw for 126 yards and a score, while also collecting two touchdown runs. Addison Rasnick (six carries, 95 yards, two touchdowns) rounded out the offensive attack for the Deacons.

Stephen Vikara gained 143 rushing yards for Rye Cove.

Powell Valley 35, Pound 18
In Pound, Va., Lucas Fannon caught four passes for 102 yars and Bryan Rentfrow ran for 87 yards on 12 carries as the Vikings beat the Widcats.
Pound’s Aaron Balthis led the Wildcats on the ground with 90 rushing yards.

Haysi 41, T. Valley 0
In Haysi, Va., Chris Fleming threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns with Hobert Newberry pulling in three of them as the Tigers ran roughshod over Panthers.
Dakota Stanley caught only two passes, but they were both for scores and garnered the sophomore 93 yards on the night. Newberry compiled 164 yards on three catches.
Up next for Haysi (4-5, 2-0 Black Diamond) is a home date with Honaker.

George Wythe 39, Rural Retreat 7
Brandon Atwell led the way for George Wythe once again as the Maroons moved closer to clinching the Hogoheegee District title.
Atwell rushed for 177 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns.
Travis Anderson gained 102 yards and a touchdown for Rural Retreat.

Gate City 49, Lee 0
Gate City clinched it second straight Clinch Mountain District title with the resounding victory at Legion Field.
Quarterback Dusty Clark rushed for two touchdowns and passed for one. Trey Clark added two scores for GC, which rushed for 328 yards.
Lee was held to 110 total yards.

T. Walker 38, Twin Springs 0
Thomas Walker remained atop the Cumberland District standings with a convincing win over visiting Twin Springs. Cody Williams had two touchdown runs for the Pioneers, who finished with 412 rushing yards as a team.
The TW defense also limited Twin Springs to just five first downs and 33 rushing yards. The Pioneers host St. Paul next week in a showdown for the district title.

Tri-Cities Christian 34, South Haven 6
Drew Davenport rushed for 62 yards and scored two touchdowns and also threw for 81 yards and a score to lead Tri-Cities Christian to a playoff win. Jackson Skinner had his first career TD reception for TCC, while Eurenna Semper rushed for two scores. Tri-Cities Christian will play in a state championship game in their respective division next week at Bristol’s Gene Malcolm Stadium.

Boone 28, Crockett 7
Blake Shropshire scored two touchdowns as Daniel Boone defeated rival David Crockett in the annual Musket Bowl.

D-B 37, Volunteer 0
Dobyns-Bennett’s David Roop scored three touchdowns to lead the Indians to an easy win over the winless Volunteer Falcons.
