BRIEFS: Locals Compete At Trailblazer Invitational Cross Country Meet

GRAY, Tenn. – The Abingdon High School boys cross country team had a strong showing on Saturday afternoon during the 37th annual Trailblazer Invitational hosted by Daniel Boone High School.

The Falcons finished second in the team standings of the prestigious event, placing second behind Morristown West. George Tolton, a senior, led the Abingdon contingent with a sixth-place showing and
completed the 5K course in 17:14.70.

Colby Hinchey (12th, 17:43.20), Michael Gifford (18th, 17:58.19), Tanner Cook (22nd, 18:01.85) and Ryan McMurray (31st, 18:27.63) also had solid showings for the Falcons.

Morristown West’s Spencer Frantom was the individual winner in the boys race with a time of 16:16.83, while Tennessee High’s Andre Blow placed 14th in 17:48.38.

In the girls race, John Battle’s Mariah Arnold and the Patrick Henry team had the top showings among locals.

Arnold finished second overall to Science Hill’s Molly Foster. Foster won in 19:59.84, while Arnold was runner-up in 20:11.42.

Patrick Henry’s Krista McCray finished seventh (20:55.29) and helped the Rebels finish fifth in the team standings. Sarah Stanley (30th, 22:35.83) and Kara Montgomery (46th, 23:23.67) also aided PH’s team effort.

Evan Ferrell of Richlands (10th, 21:02.20), Abingdon’s Kensie Skeens (12th, 21:12.59) and Lebanon’s Tabby Arwood (13th, 21:22.61) also placed in the top-15.

Dobyns-Bennett took the girls team title.

PREP FOOTBALL
Tri-Cities 49, Metro Christian 6
Cooper Singletary scored six touchdowns as Tri-Cities Christian rolled to a win over Metro Christian Academy in a game played Friday night.

Singletary gained 149 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 20, 1, 4, 5 and 32 yards. He also returned an interception 40 yards for a TD and finished with three picks on the night.

Caleb Waldecker had seven tackles and scored a TD for Tri-Cities, which won the TACS regular-season championship.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
VI splits matches
Virginia Intermont College split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon.

The Cobras collected a 25-16, 25-17, 25-12 victory over Johnson Bible, before Southern Virginia notched a 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 win over the Cobras.

Jessie Blevins (17 digs, four aces), Amber Nash (15 digs), Brandi Blessing (seven kills) and Kaitlin Crutchley (six kills) all had productive days for Virginia Intermont.

MEN’S SOCCER
Mars Hill 1, King 0
Giovanni Malnati scored in the 85th minute, giving Mars Hill a road win over King College on Saturday afternoon. King fell to 7-6 on the season with the loss.

Milligan 2, Reinhardt 0
Senior Philip Wilson and sophomore Nathan Tekle each scored goals as Milligan College moved atop the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Va. Wesleyan 5, E&H 0
Virginia Wesleyan recorded its seventh straight shutout with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Emory & Henry.
Emory & Henry (8-7, 2-6) received nine saves from goalkeeper Hayley Poland.

GOLF
Oregon State, UT lead tourney
Oregon State and the University of Tennessee are tied for the lead after two rounds of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
The nationally-ranked teams have each shot a nine-under-par 567 through two rounds. East Tennessee State University sits seventh in the 15-team field.
Diego Velasquez of Oregon State leads the individual standings after rounds of 66 and 70. He leads by three strokes over UNC Wilmington’s Josh Brock and Tennessee’s David Holmes in the leaderboard.
ETSU’s Rhys Enoch is tied for 18th.
