LOCALS IN COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: McKinney Makes Six Tackles For VMI

Virginia Military Institute defensive end Patrick McKinney had his best performance of the season on Saturday.

McKinney made six tackles and assisted on a sack in VMI’s 20-6 loss to Coastal Carolina. A former star at Powell Valley High School, McKinney has been in on 15 stops this season for the Keydets.

Coleman’s contributions
Sutton Coleman (Lebanon) has contributed at wide receiver and on special teams this fall for the Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology football team.
Coleman has one reception for five yards and has returned two punts for a total of nine yards in five games. He’s also seen time at kicker and booted his lone kickoff 58 yards.

Fast Fender
Former Marion High School standout Doug Fender was the top performer for the Roanoke College men’s cross country team at Saturday’s Furman University Invitational.
Fender finished 38th out of 127 runners in the 8K event with a time of 28 minutes, 53 seconds.

Graves honored
Abingdon High School graduate Griff Graves has earned another accolade.
The Syracuse University sophomore cross country runner has been selected as Syracuse’s Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 12.
Graves won the Colgate Invitational earlier this year, placed eighth at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational and has helped Syracuse earn the 11th spot in the national rankings.

Zaldana: Top 20
Milligan College junior Lili Zaldana (Tennessee High) finished 16th in the women’s division at the Disney Cross Country Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on Saturday
Zaldana crossed the finish line in 19:35.

Ketron leads Maroons
Former Abingdon High School golfer Brandon Ketron carded the top score for the Roanoke College golf team at the Ted Keller Memorial tournament last week.
Ketron shot a two-day total of 148 to tie for sixth with Randolph-Macon’s Max Wyndorf.

Talley tallies a 77
Tusculum College freshman David Talley fired a 77 on Monday during the opening round of the Queens University Invitational at the TPC Sawgrass Valley Course in Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.
Talley, a former standout at Virginia High, is tied for 49th after posting a five-over par score on the Pete Dye-designed course. Talley won the Tusculum Invitational earlier this fall.

Smith shines in fall ball
Allie Smith has been swinging a hot bat for the Milligan College softball team.
The former multi-sport star at Lebanon High School recently put together two strong performances during Milligan’s fall schedule.
She went 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI in a 6-3 victory over Pfeiffer University last week and collected Milligan’s lone hit during a 3-0 loss to East Tennessee State University on Saturday.
