The University of Virginia’s College at Wise came up with a clutch performance last week.
The Highland Cavaliers put up big numbers on offense and received some key defensive stops in a 28-21 victory over Georgetown (Ky.) College.
“It gave us some perspective on ourselves,” said UVa.-Wise coach Bruce Wasem. “It showed us the ability that we have and what we have to do to win against quality teams.”
This week, there can be no letdown for the Highland Cavaliers. As every contest from this point on is a must-win for Wasem’s team, UVa.-Wise must be focused entering today’s Mid-South Conference contest with Campbellsville (Ky.) University.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
The Mid-South Conference’s East Division is still wide open and both UVa.-Wise (3-2) and Campbellsville (3-2) are in the running for the title and a possible playoff berth.
“This is another test this week,” Wasem said. “They are a quality team and are getting votes for the NAIA Top 25 [poll]. We’ve got to win a couple of games on the road if we’re really going to show we’re a top-notch team like we’d like to be.”
The heroes were numerous for Wise in last week’s win. Sophomore Marcus Bratton intercepted two passes, including the game-clincher with 37 seconds left, while senior quarterback Brad Robbins threw three touchdown passes.
Several players who weren’t penciled in to contribute at the beginning of the season have entered the lineup and produced.
“They’re young kids, but they are playing real well,” Wasem said.
And they will have to do it again this week. UVa.-Wise is 1-3 away from Carl Smith Stadium this year.
“We’ve got to step up the way we did last week against Georgetown and start to meet that challenge,” Wasem said.
