LOCALS IN COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: McCoy The Real Deal For Duquesne

Former George Wythe High School star Larry McCoy has experienced success this season at Duquesne University.

Just five games into his college football career, Larry McCoy has already made a big impact at Duquesne University.

The redshirt freshman was honored as the Northeast Conference rookie of the week after another strong performance in Duquesne’s 34-20 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday.

The former George Wythe High School star rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns and in doing so earned his second NEC top newcomer award of the season.

McCoy leads the Dukes with 489 rushing yards and three touchdowns this season.

Stanton’s stops
Former Richlands High School standout Rob Stanton has appeared in three games this season for the Virginia Tech football team. Stanton has made two tackles, including a solo stop in Tech’s victory over Nebraska on Sept. 19.

Carson-Newman Kid
Tennessee High graduate Miles Hite has played in four games for the Carson-Newman College football team. The 6-foot, 230-pound sophomore lineman has one tackle to his credit.

Curt’s Contributions
Quarterback Curt Phillips (Sullivan South) has contributed for the unbeaten University of Wisconsin football squad, appearing in two games for the Badgers as Scott Tolzien’s backup.
Phillips has rushed eight times for 126 yards and completed 4-of-6 passes for 37 yards.

Good day for Graves
Abingdon High School graduate Griff Graves ran another good race on Saturday for the Syracuse University men’s cross country team.
Graves finished eighth overall at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, navigating the 8K course in 24 minutes, 6 seconds and helping Syracuse claim the team title.

Locals at Lees-McRae
April Harris (Lee High) and Ashley May (Chilhowie) had strong performances for the Lees-McRae College women’s cross country team at The Citadel Invitational on Sept. 26.
Harris was fifth among NCAA Division II runners in the 5K race with a time of 20:46.83, while May placed 17th in 21:36.88.

Grant’s homecoming
Tonight will be a homecoming of sorts for Roanoke College freshman volleyball player Morgan Grant, who makes her return to Southwest Virginia.
Roanoke (9-9) plays at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Emory & Henry tonight at 6:30 p.m.
A former standout at Abingdon High School, Grant has appeared in 14 matches for Roanoke and has supplied solid all-around play, tallying 21 kills, 10 digs, nine blocks, three assists and three aces for the Maroons.

Perrigan’s Power
Entering Tuesday night’s match with King College, Milligan College senior Kalyn Perrigan had controlled the net for the Buffaloes.
The former Tennessee High standout led Milligan in kills (117) and ranks second on the team in blocks with 28.

Grimm’s stock soaring
The Major League Baseball Amateur Draft takes place in June, but former Virginia High star Justin Grimm is already on the radar of professional scouts.
Grimm was recently ranked the 23rd-best college draft prospect in a list published by Baseball America. Grimm was 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 15 starts for Georgia last season and will be the Bulldogs’ ace this spring.
Grimm was drafted in the 13th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 draft after a standout career at VHS, but passed on the pros to play in the Southeastern Conference.

Two wins for Tusculum
A pair of players from Bristol helped the Tusculum College women’s tennis team earn a 9-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith on Saturday.
Katelyn Doss (Virginia High) and Blake Thompson (Tennessee High) earned wins in singles for the Pioneers, while Doss also teamed with Caroline Crowe to win at No. 1 doubles.
