PREP ROUNDUP: Richlands Thumps Rival Tazewell

TAZEWELL, Va. — The Johnson cousins combined for four touchdowns as the Richlands Blue Tornado stopped Southwest District rival Tazewell, 42-7, on Friday night.
Quarterback Cody Johnson opened the scoring for Richlands (4-1, 2-0) with a one-yard sneak, then connected with Austin Johnson on a 50-yard scoring pass. Austin Johnson added two more scoring runs, finishing with 107 yards rushing on just 12 carries.

Richlands led 35-0 after three quarters.

Taviaz Wilborn supplied the lone score for Tazewell (3-3, 1-2) with a 55-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter.

J.I. Burton 41, Coeburn 0
Martinez Miles rushed for three first-quarter touchdowns and J.I. Burton blanked non-district foe Coeburn.

Miles finished with 112 yards on nine carries and scored on runs of 2, 21 and 7 yards. Malik Miles (six carries, 91 yards, one TD) and Seth Pennington (four, 79 yards, one TD) also keyed Burton’s rushing attack.

Adam Hill and Darren Greear each had 64 rushing yards for Coeburn.

Clintwood 31, Powell Valley 8
Senior Justin Reed rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown in his first start of the season, while Clintwood’s defense was dominant in claiming a Lonesome Pine District victory at Ralph Cummins Stadium.

Clintwood (4-1, 1-0) held Powell Valley (2-4, 1-1) to four first downs and 70 rushing yards. The Vikings’ lone score came with 26 seconds left in the contest.

Austin Dotson added 72 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown for Clintwood, while Trey Meade threw two TD passes to Ryan Elswick.

Appalachia 22, Patrick Henry 18
In Appalachia, Tyler Barker ran for two scores and Cody Carter ran the ball nine times for 118 yards as the Bulldogs picked up a tight win over the Rebels.
Patrick Henry (1-4) got 164 yards passing from Jonathan Whitesides.
Appalachia (3-2) heads to Saint Paul next week.

H. Valley 28, East 14
Touchdown runs from Austin Glover and John Ryan weren’t enough for Sullivan East as the Patriots suffered a Three Rivers Conference road loss.
East (2-5) did rush for 227 yards, but struggled in the passing game. Happy Valley received a touchdown run and two touchdown passes from Ethan Fleenor in winning its third straight.

Fort Chiswell 28, George Wythe 21
George Wythe couldn’t contain Fort Chiswell running back Chris Rodriguez and lost to the Pioneers for the first time since 1996.
Rodriguez finished with 267 yards rushing and four scores for Fort Chiswell (5-1), which sent GW (2-3) to its second straight defeat.
Brandon Atwell rushed for 212 yards and scored three TDs for the Maroons.

Haysi 22, Thomas Walker 7
Haysi quarterback Chris Fleming passed for 147 yards and Haysi posted its first win of the season.

Haysi (1-4) trailed 7-6 after the first quarter, before pulling away for the victory.

Ryan Scott’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Steven Escobar accounted for Thomas Walker’s lone touchdown.

D-B 42, S. South 28
Chris Sensabaugh, Derrick Steele and David Roop all scored two touchdowns as Dobyns-Bennett stopped Kingsport rival Sullivan South.
D-B, which rushed for 316 yards, opened a 27-6 halftime lead.
Heath Haden and Bobby Taylor each scored twice for Sullivan South.

Gate City 22, Bluefield (W.Va.) 6
The Blue Devils rushed for 233 yards en route to the non-district win at Legion Field.
Clinch Mountain District rushing leader Joseph Vaughn contributed a 33-yard scoring run for Gate City in the final quarter.
Quarterback Dusty Clark added two scoring runs for Gate City.

Glenvar 28, R. Retreat 14
Glenvar opened a 14-0 halftime lead and rushed for 267 yards en route to the non-district win.
Tyler Caudill scored a 10-yard run for Rural Retreat, while Zayne Williams added a two-yard touchdown.

Science Hill 21, Crockett 20
Justin Snyder passes for 215 yards and two touchodowns as Science Hill rallied past David Crockett.

Daniel Boone 46, Sullivan Central 7
Dakota Whitson’s 102-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter highlighted Daniel Boone’s Big Eight Conference win over Sullivan Central.
Taylor Winchell scored Central’s lone touchdown.

Princeton (W.Va.) 26, Graham 14
David Marrs rushed for 76 yards and passed for 65 more, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Graham lost a non-district road game.

BOYS SOCCER
Providence 2, Maryville Christian 1
Caleb Williams converted two penalty kicks and Providence Academy of Johnson City earned its 14th win.
