Seattle Seahawks running back Julius Jones is having a solid season.
The former Powell Valley High School star has gained 226 yards on the ground through three games and ranks 11th among all NFL running backs in total rushing yards.
He’s also showcased a new phase of his game.
Jones has caught two touchdown passes this season after not recording a single TD catch in his first five seasons in
the league.
He hauled in a 39-yard scoring strike from Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace on Sunday in the first quarter of the Seahawks’ 25-19 loss to the Chicago Bears.
He also rushed for 98 yards on 19 carries against the Bears and was one of Seattle’s few bright spots.
Big day for Bradshaw
Graham High School graduate Ahmad Bradshaw turned in one of the best performances of his professional career on Sunday for the New York Giants.
Bradshaw gained 104 yards on 14 carries in the Giants’ 24-0 victory over Tampa Bay. It was his first 100-yard rushing outburst since Dec. 23, 2007.
Bradshaw has rushed for 201 yards this season and also has five receptions for 19 yards.
Franklin sacks Favre
San Francisco 49ers nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin (Science Hill) dropped a future Hall of Famer to the turf on Sunday in a 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
With 13:46 left in the third quarter, Franklin broke through the line and sacked Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre for a 9-yard loss.
It was Franklin’s lone tackle of the day. He has five tackles this season for San Francisco.
The other Jones
After putting together a brilliant 107-yard, two-touchdown performance in the season-opener, New York Jets running back Thomas Jones (Powell Valley) has struggled the last two weeks.
Jones gained just 20 yards on 14 carries in the Jets’ victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, one week after being limited to 54 yards on 14 carries against the New England Patriots.
More catches for Miller
Former Honaker High School standout Heath Miller continues to be one of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite targets.
The tight end had five receptions for 20 yards on Sunday in the Steelers’ 23-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He has 16 receptions for 111 yards this season.
Witten: Top tight end
Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys continues to show why he is one of the NFL’s top tight ends.
The former Elizabethton High School star had nine catches for 77 yards on Monday night in the Cowboys’ 21-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Among league tight ends, Witten ranks second in receptions (19) and fifth in receiving yards (181) this season.
Sensabaugh’s stops
Dallas Cowboys defensive back Gerald Sensabaugh (Dobyns-Bennett) had three tackles on Monday in the win over Carolina and has made 17 stops on the season.
