Charleston, S.C.College of Charleston junior forward Antwaine Wiggins will miss the 2009-10 basketball season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Wiggins tore the ACL in his left knee while working out last week.

“It’s a big blow for Antwaine and our team,” said coach Bobby Cremins, who enters his fourth season with the Cougars. “He’s our best defensive player, but in the long run it could help with his development. He will be missed. The younger players will really have to step up.”

Wiggins (6-7, 180), who helped Charleston to a 27-9 record last season, is the team’s fourth-leading returning scorer. The Greeneville, Tenn. native averaged 8.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while starting all 36 games. He was second on the team with 37 blocked shots.

The Cougars open the season with an exhibition game against USC Aiken on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. at Carolina First Arena. Regular season play begins at Coastal Carolina on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
