RICHMOND, Va. – Gate City High School repeated as Virginia High School League Group A state volleyball champion on Saturday, posting a 21-25, 28-26, 25-23, 16-25, 15-10 win over Bath County at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Callie Sloop had 37 assists and 17 digs for Gate City (25-1), while Lindsey Burke contributed 26 digs and Ashton Dougherty recorded 16 kills and 10 digs in the victory. After a marathon five-game victory
over Strasburg in Friday’s semifinals, the Blue Devils once again collected a grueling win.
Bath County was the Region C champion and had state tournament wins over John Battle and Mathews. However, the Chargers were no match for Gate City.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Tennessee High 67, Hampton 29
Ryan Matheson and Tyler Place each scored 15 points and Tennessee High improved to 2-0 with a victory over Hampton on Saturday night.
The Vikings built a 25-point halftime lead and never looked back en route to the win. Jace DeVault added 10 points for THS, which has gotten solid defensive play in taking its first two games.
Sullivan East 66, Crockett 53
Sullivan East 68, Cloudland 49
Sullivan East posted a pair of victories on Saturday in the Hall of Champions Shootout in Bluff City.
In the Patriots’ opening win over Crockett, Jordan Cross poured in 23 points as the Patriots raced out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the win. Trey Gilreath added 14 points.
In the nightcap, East (3-0) had three players reach double figures in an easy victory: Chase Depew (18 points), Trey Gilreath (14 points) and Zane Campbell (11 points).
The Patriots play in the Hardee’s Classic next week in Jonesborough.
Tri-Cities 59, Hendersonville 55
Benji Nunn pumped in 17 points and Tri-Cities Christian beat host Hendersonville in the championship game of the Chick-fil-A Classic.
Tri-Cities (3-0) also received 11 points from Cooper Singletary and nine points and nine rebounds from Justin Williams.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sullivan East 74, David Crockett 51
Cloudland 54, Sullivan East 39
Sullivan East splits its games on Saturday in the Hall of Champions Shootout in Bluff City.
The Patriots opened the day with a convicing win over David Crockett as Angel Trent (16 points), Savanna Summers (11 points) and Katie Smith (10 points) paced the Patriots.
East later suffered a loss to Cloudland, falling behind by 13 points at halftime and never recovering. No player reached double figures for the Patriots in the contest.
