WISE, Va. – Jason Lovett lingered on the field at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s Carl Smith Stadium on Saturday. He was one of the last Highland Cavaliers to head to the locker room.
The dynamic senior wide receiver was in a reflective mood after playing his final home game in UVa.-Wise’s 38-21 Mid-South Conference loss to the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).
“The last time I’ll be on this field,” Lovett said. “It’s kind of a bummer it had to end like this.”
Cumberlands bottled up Lovett in his final game at Carl Smith Stadium. He rushed four times for 15 yards and caught six passes for 65 yards.
However, he was held out of the end zone after accounting for a team-high 11 touchdowns in the first nine games of the season.
Lovett also added a new wrinkle to the Wise offense when he lined up in the “Wildcat” – or “Wildcav” as some UVa.-Wise fans called it – formation on four occasions in the first half. He failed to complete
his lone pass attempt from the wacky scheme and was contained for the most part by the Cumberlands defense.
Senior Day stuff
Fifteen UVa.-Wise seniors were honored as part of Senior Day festivities before the game. Lovett, Brad Robbins, Hakeem Abdul-Saboor, Matt Barbour, Brad Ricker, Aric Evans, Brian Pisani, Yussiff Thulla, James Haley, Keith McBride, Brett Hammack, Matt Gular, Chad Hooker, Scott Utterback and Lance Ayers were all recognized.
Two-way standout
Amondre Johnson played well on both sides of the ball for UVa.-Wise. He racked up a team-high 12 tackles and recovered a fumble from his inside linebacker position. Meanwhile, he was once again used as a running back in goal-line situations.
He scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give UVa.-Wise a 14-7 lead. It was the third TD run of the season for the 5-foot-10, 233-pound sophomore.
Up next
UVa.-Wise (5-5) closes out the season next Saturady at Faulkner (Ala.) University. The Highland Cavaliers will aim for their fourth straight winning season and 11th in the 19-year history of the program.
