JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — An early lead disappeared quickly for King College as the Tornado dropped a 96-59 women’s basketball exhibition game to East Tennessee State University on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Center.
King jumped out to a 13-4 lead behind the shooting of Ashley Deans, but ETSU easily overcame the deficit and turned the game into a blowout with a 38-4 run midway through the first half.
TaRonda Wiles led six ETSU players in double figures with 19 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Tarita Gordon added 14 points for the Buccaneers, who shot 56.1 percent from the field.
Allison Bosse led King with 18 points, while Deans added 16 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore post player Kalen Collins (J.J. Kelly) had five points, three rebounds and a steal in 13 minutes off the bench for King.
Freshman Cheyenne Thornsberry (Tennessee High) added two points and two rebounds in seven minutes for KC.
King opens the regular season on Tuesday at Tusculum, while ETSU hosts Chattanooga in its season-opener on Friday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UVa.-Wise 79, Shawnee State 73
Adam Hood pumped in 22 points and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise improved to 2-0 with a double overtime win.
Hood hit four three throws in the closing moments of the second OT to clinch the victory. The former Rye Cove High School standout also dished out four assists.
Pance Kecev (21 points) and Mark Phillips (10 points) also scored in double figures for UVa.-Wise. Kevin Perry contributed nine rebounds for the Highland Cavaliers.
BOYS BASKETBALL
KACHEA 59, Mt. Empire Baptist 29
Tyler Grubb and Tanner Shope scored nine points apiece, but it wasn’t enough as Mountain Empire Baptist suffered a loss on Friday night.
VOLLEYBALL
King 3, Va. Intermont 1
Rachel Harding recorded 14 digs and served four aces as King College closed out the regular season with a 25-15, 21-25, 25-13, 25-17 victory over crosstown rival Virginia Intermont.
Morgan Machen added 12 kills and six blocks for King (24-9), while Whitney Turner added seven blocks. Ashley Pittman (10 kills) and Katie Fleming (30 assists) also played well for the Tornado.
King will next compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association regional tournament. Meanwhile, VI (7-28) starts play in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament this week in Kingsport.
Bridgewater 3, E&H 1
Emory & Henry’s season ended on Friday night with a loss to Bridgewater in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
Bridgewater won by scores of 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 26-24. E&H (20-7) was led by sophomore Rachel Fertitta’s 19 kills. Samantha Shepard (10 kills), Twyla Sessor (28 digs), Erin Holben (29 digs) and Reagan Clarke (37 assists) also played well for the Wasps.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Milligan 3, Montreat 0
Former Sullivan Central High School star Rachel Martin scored a goal to highlight Milligan’s victory over Montreat in the fist round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament.
Nine Henriksson and Britta Widenhouse also scored for the Buffaloes.
MEN’S SOCCER
Milligan 4, VI 0
Senior Phil Wilson scored three goals as the Buffaloes banked Virginia Intermont in Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Milligan won the AAA regular season title.
