BRIEFS: PH Runner Claims Region C Crown

TROUTVILLE, Va. – Patrick Henry High School’s Krista McCray had another first-place finish and helped her team reach the state meet on Thursday afternoon in the Region C cross country championships at Lord Botetourt High School.

McCray won the girls race in 21 minutes, 21.31 seconds, besting runner-up Kaitlin Smith of Radford. PH finished second in the team standings with 60, 25 behind winner Radford.

Sarah Stanley added an 11th-place finish for PH, while Gracie Meadows was 15th. George Wythe’s Deanna Hedgepath finished seventh.

In the boys race, PH’s Skyler Carbary had the top showing among Hogoheegee harries with an ninth-place finish in 18:37.33. George Wythe’s Hunter Mills placed 15th, helping the Maroons finish fifth in
the team standings.

PREP FOOTBALL
TCC to play for title
Tri-Cities Christian will play for the Tennessee Association of Christian Schools state championship tonight at Bristol’s Gene Malcolm Stadium.

The Eagles (7-4) will play Hendersonville Christian (10-1) at 7 p.m.

TCC advanced with a 34-6 semifinal win over South Haven as Jackson Skinner, Drew Davenport and Eurenna Semper all scored touchdowns in the victory.

The Eagles suffered a 28-20 loss to Lighthouse Christian in last year’s state-title contest.

PREP VOLLEYBALL
Carroll Co. 3, Tazewell 0
Maleah Neely collected 15 assists and 10 kills as Carroll County swept Tazewell, 25-17, 25-15, 26-25, in the Southwest District tournament final in Hillsville.

Dionna Reece (12 kills) and Lauren Roper (10 kills) also played well for Carroll County, which has won 13 of the past 14 SWD tournament titles.

Marion defeated Richlands, 25-19, 26-24, 25-18, in the third place match. Carroll County also defeated Abingdon in the junior varsity championship.

Carroll County (21-1) will host Hidden Valley Tuesday night at 7 in the opening round of the Region IV tournament. Marion will travel to Cave Spring on Tuesday, while Tazewell will face the No. 3 seed in
the Piedmont District.

J.I. Burton 3, P. Valley 0
Rashelle Miller collected 20 kills as J.I. Burton stopped Powell Valley, 27-25, 25-21, 27-25, for the Lonesome Pine District tournament title.

Chelsea Forney (11 kills), Jessica Hensley (37 assists) and Cassie Godsey (seven kills, 10 digs, 19 service points) also played well for Burton.

Tasha Trent paced PV with 14 kills and six digs. Cassie Sturgill added 21 assists for the Vikings.

Powell Valley swept Clintwood in two games for the junior varsity championship.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
King 3, UVa.-Wise 0
Morgan Machen recorded 10 kills as King College rolled to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 non-conference win over the University of Virginia.s College at Wise.
Katie Fleming added 25 assists for King (23-9), while Daria Wilson notched 14 digs and Rachel Harding served five aces. Autumn Chisenhall led UVa.-Wise (9-20) with seven kills.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
UVa.-Wise 104, Alice Lloyd 75
Adam Hood pumped in 26 points to lead five players in double figures as the University of Virginia’s College at Wise opened the season with a win.
The foul-plagued contest saw a total of 68 fouls and 81 free throws. Pance Kecev contributed 21 points for UVa.-Wise, while Kevin Perry collected 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UVa.-Wise 83, Alice Lloyd 80
Freshman Charlotte Reasor pumped in 15 points and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to win its season opener.
Meghan Rutherford added 13 points and five rebounds for Wise, while Amber Carter (12 points) and Ayla Young (10 points) also scored in double digits.

ODAC poll released
Emory & Henry was picked for eighth among 11 teams in the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll.
E&H received 44 points in the voting. Roanoke (120 points) and Randolph-Macon (109) are the ODAC favorites.
