PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Marion ends Abingdon's season in SWD tourney

MARION, Va. — The Marion Scarlet Hurricanes got 10 kills, three blocks and three aces from Suzie Thompson and 10 kills and six digs from Miranda Hayden as they rolled to a 25-18, 25-21, 27-25 win over the Abingdon Falcons in the first round of the Southwest District volleyball tournament.
Morgan Goodbrod dished out 31 assists, while scooping up 10 digs and MacKenzie Demaree added 17 digs. The Hurricanes will face Tazwell on Wednesday.

Tazewell 3, Grundy 0
The duo of Cara Cecil and Sydnei Lester helped Tazewell top Grundy 25-7, 25-20, 25-19 in the first round of the Southwest District tournament.
Cecil had 15 kills and four digs, while Lester contributed 11 kills and five blocks. Lindsey Scribner added 23 assists and seven digs for Tazewell (14-6), while Natasha Blankenship doled out 27 assists.
The Bulldogs play Marion in the tourney semifinals on Wednesday.

Richlands 3, Grundy 0
Cassie Ringstaff racked up 16 assists, four kills and three aces as Richlands rolled to a 26-24, 25-19, 25-17 victory in the first round of the Southwest District tournament.
Catherine Smith (seven kills, two blocks) and Morgan Hill (15 digs, four aces) also played well for the Blue Tornado, who face SWD champ Carroll County on Wednesday in the tourney semifinals.

J.J. Kelly 3, Clintwood 0
Andrea Hopkins had 10 digs and J.J. Kelly claimed a 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 win over Clintwood in the first round of the Lonesome Pine District tournament.

Anna Clark (10 assists), Courtney Brooks (nine kills, eight assists), Allison Mullins (seven kills, five blocks) and Ashley Mullins (four kills, three blocks) also keyed the win for Kelly.
The Indians (7-14) will play J.I. Burton in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

Clintwood (11-10) received 12 assists from Mikaela Conley.

Appalachia 3, Pound 0
Brandee Childress and Katie Brooks combined for 18 kills and five blocks as Appalachia ousted Pound from the Lonesome Pine District tournament with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 first-round win.

Chelsea Hylton (13 assists, four digs) and Kristin Collins (13 service points, nine aces, five kills, five digs) also helped Appalachia improve to 13-8 and earn a semifinal matchup with Powell Valley tonight.

Pound (4-17) was led by Jenna Stallard’s 13 digs, while Maddie Stallard (nine assists), Cassie Stallard (three service points) and Laura Carter (four kills, two blocks) also played well for the Wildcats.

Patrick Henry 3, Holston 0
Cadence Wilmoth hammered down 13 kills and Kelsey Weddle added 15 as the Rebels downed the Cavaliers 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 in the first round of the Hogoheegee tournament.
With the win, Patrick Henry will face Chilhowie at Northwood tonight.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Teach 58, Mt. Empire Baptist 51
The Mountaineers got 41 points from Andrew King along with 17 rebounds and three steals, but fell to the Guardians in their season opener on Monday.
Up next for Mountain Empire Baptist (1-0) is a home game tonight against Greeneville Adventist.

PREP FOOTBALL
Tenn. Avenue loses
The Tennessee Avenue Christian Academy Mountaineers suffered a 38-28 loss to The Silverbacks on Friday night.
Jason Pugh threw four touchdown passes and finished with 250 yards through the air for the Mountaineers (1-5), three of them to Andrew King and the other to Josiah Morton. The Mountaineers close out their season on Friday against the Asheville Saints at 7 p.m.
