POUND, Va. — Chelsea Forney collected 16 kills and 18 digs as J.I. Burton stopped Powell Valley 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-8 in a playoff for the top seed in the Lonesome Pine District volleyball tournament.
The other leaders for Burton (14-7) were Jessica Hensley (27 assists), Cassie Godsey (12 kills), Rashelle Miller (18 kills, 15 service points) and Shaniqua Woods (15 digs).
The Raiders also clinched a spot in the Region D tournament with the victory.
Tasha Trent paced PV (17-4) with 15 digs and 19 kills, while Kayla Holdway (17 digs, 29 digs), Brittany Bishop (15 digs) and Cassie Sturgill (47 assists) also played well.
Burton and Powell Valley each finished with 8-2 LPD records. The LPD tourney starts Monday in Pound.
Galax wins MED
Galax completed a perfect run through the Mountain Empire District by winning the district tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroon Tide (17-4) posted a 25-20, 25-16, 25-11 win over Narrows in the semifinals and followed that up with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Fort Chiswell in the finals.
Sisters Allison White and Jennifer White led the way for Galax. Allison, a sophomore, had 38 kills, 12 service points, eight blockes and seven aces on the day. Jenna, a senior, tallied 35 assists, 13 service points, 11 digs, six aces and three blocks in the two matches.
Galax is coached by former Patrick Henry High School and Emory & Henry College standout Rose Houk.
Galax and Fort Chiswell will both represent the MED in the Region C tournament. Fort Chiswell collected a 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 semifinal win over Bland to clinch a regional tourney berth.
D-B wins title
Dobyns-Bennett claimed the TSSAA Class AAA state championship on Friday with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Ravenwood.
Megan Devine led D-B with 19 kills in the title match.
The Indians went 4-0 in the state tournament and finished the season with a 52-3 record. It was the first state title for D-B head coach Kathi Shaffer, who previously coached at Sullivan East.
Ravenwood (52-4) suffered three of its four losses to D-B this fall.
