HONAKER, Va.Powell Valley and Honaker battled for 32 minutes and came away even. But in the four overtime minutes, the Vikings blew by Honaker to take an 84-78 win at A. P. Baldwin Gymnasium. Powell Valley now advances to the final four in Region D, Division 2.

An eight-point Honaker lead early in the second quarter was the largest of the game until the overtime period. The game was tied 13 times and there were eight lead changes.

“This was a good high school basketball game,” PV coach Zack Moore said. “Win or lose, I thought we played extremely hard and I thought Honaker played extremely hard.”

It was a very special night for Powell Valley senior Jordan Martin, who finished with 28 points, including passing the 1,000-career points plateau late in the first half.

“It feels good to have a 1,000,” said Martin. “But I just wanted to win the game. It wouldn’t have been that special if we had lost. This was a big win. It was just a close game and we were able to finish it up.”

Honaker (11-14) held a 64-60 lead with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Dakota Cantrell had the ball at the top of the key, looking for someone to pass to. He couldn’t find anyone, so he launched a 3 that scorched the net to pull the Vikings within one point. The teams then traded free throws.

Honaker’s Justin Hall was fouled with nine seconds remaining. He had hit 13 in a row from the charity stripe but number 14 bounced off the rim. Hall dropped in the next one to put the Tigers up 66-64. Martin then sent the game to overtime when he found an opening and made a layup with two seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

“We were fortunate down the stretch,” Moore said. “Cantrell stepped up and hit a big 3 for us. Honaker missed a couple of free throws to give us a chance. We put the ball in Martin’s hands and he made a play.”

Martin then started the Vikings on a 10-0 run in overtime.

“We never recovered from having to go into overtime,” Honaker coach Waylon Hart said. “We thought we had it in regulation but Powell Valley hit some big shots. The kids played hard, we just didn’t get any stops when we needed them.”

The Vikings also received a huge night from sophomore Tyler Garrison, who finished with a game-high 33 points, including seven 3-pointers. Garrison kept Powell Valley in the game in the third quarter, scoring every point for the Vikings.

Hall had an unbelievable night for the Tigers. He ended his high school career with an impressive double-double and tallied 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss. Corey Brown was impressive off the bench with 17 points for the Tigers.

Powell Valley (15-10) advances to play Castlewood in the semifinals at Lebanon on Friday.
