The Milligan College men’s basketball team (16-13, 9-9) finished their regular season with a 67-63 win over Tennessee Wesleyan College (Athens, Tenn.) Saturday, Feb. 21. This was also a big night for the Buffs as Milligan honored Head Coach Tony Wallingford in his last home game as he steps down from helm of the basketball program after 21 years. Former players, alumni, and faculty were all in attendance to recognize and honor Wallingford on his accomplishments.
The Buffs led the game at halftime with a score of 35-30. For the first half the Buffs shot 52% (16-31) from the field, 67% (2-3) from beyond the arc, and 25% (1-4) from the free throw line.
The game was tight until the end, but the Buffs were able to edge the Bulldogs and come away with the win. The Buffs shot 46% (10-22) from the field, 40% (2-5) from beyond the arc, and 63% (10-16) from the free throw line in the second half.
Senior Jeff Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) and senior Tyler Estepp (Limestone, Tenn.) wrapped up their last home game for Milligan College on their senior night by leading the Buffs with 18 points each. Barnes also had 19 rebounds. Freshman D’Juan Epps (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) added eight points.
“Both teams played very hard,” said Head Coach Tony Wallingford. “I’m really happy for Tyler and Jeff because they got the final win at home. It’s good to end the season on a winning note. Hopefully this can give us some confidence going into the conference tournament.”
The Buffs compete in the AAC Tournament on Feb. 26 in Bristol, Va. The Buffs play at 3:30 against the winner of Wednesday’s match between Bluefield and Montreat.
