PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Blevins shot lifts Chilhowie over Virginia High

CHILHOWIE, Va. — J-Rod Blevins hit a shot in the paint with 2.1 seconds left, clinching Chilhowie’s 36-34 non-district boys basketball win over visiting Virginia High on Friday night.
No players scored in double figures in the low-scoring contest. Chilhowie trailed 31-21 after three quarters, but the Warriors closed the game on a 15-3 run to put the game away. Conner Hayden and Andrew Russell each had nine points for the winners.

East 73, Johnson County 39
A near-perfect performance helped Sullivan East stay perfect on the season Friday nigh.
Jordan Cross led four players in double figures with 25 points as East improved to 11-0 with a Three Rivers Conference triumph.
Chease Depew added 12 points for East, while Chance Davis and Zane Campbell contributed 10 points apiece.

Abingdon 60, Carroll 52
Jacob Hess scored a career-high 28 points as Abingdon (2-0, 1-0) held off Carroll County in overtime.
Hess delivered 22 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Abingdon’s Ben Coleman sent the game into the extra session with a stickback at the buzzer.
Mac Martin led Carroll County with 19 points.

Appalachia 62, Coeburn 50
Forest Stuart scored 26 points and Appalachia improved to 4-0 with a non-district road win. Mladen Bogicevic added 16 points for Appy.
Andrew Pate led Coeburn (0-1) with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Holden Burke finished with 15 points.

Wolfe County (Ky.) 76, J.J. Kelly 66
Despite 22 points from Alex Couch, J.J. Kelly suffered a loss to Wolfe County (Ky.) in the second game of the Cavalier Alumni Coaches Invitational at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Trenton Gilbert led Wolfe County 17 points, while Sawyer Denniston had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Aaron Clark added 17 points for Kelly, while Adam Dutton hauled down 10 rebounds.
Kelly is coached by UVa.-Wise alum T.J. McAmis, while former UVa.-Wise standout Bull Creech.

Powell Valley 60, Hurley 33
Tyler Garrison, a 5-foot-8 junior, pumped in 22 points and Powell Valley overpowered Hurley for a victory in the Cavalier Alumni Coaches Invitational at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.Ryan Hubbard added 16 points for Powell Valley, which shot 5-for-10 from beyond 3-point range and built a 10-point lead after one quarter.
Dustin Waynick led Hurley with 13 points.
Powell Valley is coached by former UVa.-Wise star Zack Moore, while UVa.-Wise graduate Mark Cooper directs Hurley.

Sullivan South 61, Central 44
Sullivan Central’s Nathan Vannoy scored 20 points, but it was all for naught as the Cougars lost a Big Eight Conference road game to the Rebels.
Central (4-5, 1-2) also received 15 points from Taylor Winchell.

Haysi 67, Grundy 60
Chris Fleming had 28 points as Haysi handed Grundy a non-district loss. Byron Bowman added 12 points for Haysi, which trailed by four points after the first quarter, but dominated the rest of the way.
Derek Hess led Grundy with 26 points.

Northwood 66, Bland 47
Trevor Hagen had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Northwood earned a non-district road win.
Jeremiah Thompson led the Panthers (2-2) with 23 points, while Ty Frye tallied 19 points in the victory.

St. Paul 67, Clintwood 48
Tyler Phillips scored 25 points to highlight St. Paul’s non-district victory over the Clintwood Greenwave.
Cameron Vanover paced Clintwood with 18 points.

Dobyns-Bennett 66, Daniel Boone 62
Adam Dennison scored 18 points and Dobyns-Bennett held off Daniel Boone for a Big Eight Conference win.
Hayden Chandley led Boone with 24 points. The Trailblazers were hurt by too many turnovers.

Tri-Cities 69, J. Frank White 59
Michael Freeman scored 27 points as Tri-Cities Christian topped J. Frank White Academy. Benji Nunn (15 points) and Cooper Singletary (13 points) also played well for TCC.

Mount Pisgah 72, Mtn. Empire Baptist 62
Andrew King fired in 37 points, but it wasn’t enough as Mountain Empire Baptist lost. Joe Shockley added 10 points for MEB, while Alex O’Neal contributed six points in the loss.

TACA 44, ACTS 12
Samantha Blevins had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Victoria Cox added nine points and nine rebounds in Tennessee Avenue Christian Academy’s victory over the ACTS Warriors.

PREP GIRLS
Richlands 48, Marion 39
Megan Robinson scored 17 points, leading Richlands to a Southwest District road win over Marion.
Richlands led 32-20 at halftime and held on down the stretch for the victory. Brooke Henderson led Marion with 16 points.

Haysi 47, Grundy 45
Grundy transfer Holly Bowman scored 19 points for Haysi and her current team got the best of her old one as the Tigers earned a non-district victory.
Savannah Charles led Grundy with 14 points.

Carroll County 46, Abingdon 28
Kayla Goins had 16 points and Carroll County collected yet another Southwest District victory.
Lauren Wilson’s 12 points led Abingdon.

Twin Valley 54, Rye Cove 43
Katie Jo Lester gunned in 35 points and Twin Valley took a win over Rye Cove in a consolation game of the Virginia Tip-Off Classic at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den.
Hillary Grizzle (13 points) and Cassie Hood (12 points) led Rye Cove. The Eagles have been hurt by injuries this season.

Sullivan East 61, Johnson County 36
Kelsey Moyher scored 14 points as Sullivan East eased past Johnson County in a Three Rivers Conference showdown.
Callie McGrew and Angel Trent scored 13 points apiece for East, while Savanna Summers (10 points) also played well in the all-around team effort.

St. Paul 54, Holston 28
Behind 30 points from Hannah Edmonds, St. Paul crushed non-district rival Holston. Rachel Evans added eight points for the Deacons (2-0), who led 29-2 at halftime.
Taylor Doss added nine points for Holston (0-4).

Clintwood 51, Council 17
Behind 14 points from Hope Dotson, Clintwood cruised past Council in the Lady Wildcat Tip-Off Classic at Pound on Thursday.

East Ridge (Ky.) 53, Pound 48
Despite 12 points from Samantha Balthis, Pound suffered a loss to East Ridge in the Lady Wildcat Tip-Off Classic at Pound on Thursday.
Shae Willis added 10 points for Pound.
