In just the third game of her college career, Danielle Montgomery delivered an impressive performance for the University of Massachusetts women’s basketball team.
Montgomery, a former Tennessee High standout, had 10 points and four rebounds on Dec. 2 in a 73-64 loss to Northeastern.
Montgomery has appeared in five games for UMass and is averaging 3.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest.
Buckhannon’s best
George Wythe High School graduate Ashley Buckhannon had two points, two rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists on Saturday for Radford University in a 72-36 women’s basketball win over Southern Virginia.
Buckhannon is averaging 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists through five games for RU.
Perdue’s production
Freshman Jill Perdue (Abingdon) has started strong for the Indiana (Pa.) University women’s basketball team.
Perdue scored 12 points on Saturday in a 62-55 win over District of Columbia and is averaging 6.2 points and 4.2 rebounds.
Young gets start
Former Tennessee High standout Corey Young made his first career start for the Lees-McRae (N.C.) men’s basketball team on Nov. 24 in a 124-65 loss to Pfeiffer University.
Young, a freshman, scored three points and had two steals for LMC. He’s appeared in three games this season and is averaging 1.7 points per game.
Cole’s contributions
Cole Wilder’s best performance thus far for the Radford University men’s basketball team came on Nov. 17 against Lynchburg. Wilder, a former star at George Wythe High School, had four points and one rebound in a 94-70 win.
Strong Shortridge
Logan Shortridge (Twin Valley) has started all four of Bluefield State’s four games and is averaging 7.8 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Ex-Bulldog leads Bluefield
Former Tazewell High School standout Omar Reed continues to dominate for the Bluefield College men’s basketball team. Reed is Bluefield’s leading scorer (13.1 points per game) and rebounder (9.4 rebounds per game).
Swimming standouts
Brittany Estep (Tennessee High) continues to impress for the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) swim team.
Estep currently has the top national time in the NAIA in the women’s 200 individual medley, clocking in at 2:10.95. She’s also on the top-ranked 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams.
Meanwhile, THS graduates Wayne Oliver and Greg Taylor have posted strong times for the King College men’s swim team.
