BRIEFS: BriSox Best Princeton Rays

From Staff & Wire Reports
PRINCETON, W.Va. Leighton Pangilinan drove in three runs and the Bristol White Sox pitching was superb in a 4-1 Appalachian League victory over the Princeton Rays on Saturday night at Hunnicutt Field.

Pangilinan went 2-for-4 and hammered a two-run home run in the fourth inning that erased a 1-0 deficit and gave the BriSox the lead for good. Bristol’s pitching made that advantage stand up.

Starter Alvaro Garcia (2-0, 0.69 ERA) struck out six in five strong innings. Phil Negus, Santos Rodriguez and Brent DeFoor closed out the victory out of the Bristol bullpen. DeFoor earned his third save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Bristol overcame five errors, including two by third baseman Jeffer Patino. It was a long night for Patino, who also went 0-for-4 and saw his batting average fall to .171.

Brady Shoemaker contributed two hits for Bristol (22-34), which went 3-3 on its six-game road trip. The Sox return home tonight, hosting the Kingsport Mets in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. at DeVault Stadium.

Wagner claimed off waivers
Former Tazewell High School star Billy Wagner could soon be headed to Boston.

Several reports on Friday said a team placed a waiver claim on Wagner — and more than one report indicated that team was the Boston Red Sox.

Minaya declined to comment, and Wagner said he hadn’t heard anything about a waiver claim. But the 38-year-old reliever sounded interested in going to a playoff contender.

“I think that’s what every player wants to do is play on a contender and have a shot to go to the World Series,” Wagner said. “Like we all know, I’m not getting any younger and the window is starting to shut. You want to have that chance, and take it if you get it.”

Wagner, sixth on the career list with 385 saves, was expected to miss the entire season following elbow ligament replacement surgery last September. But he made a fast recovery and returned to the
Mets on Thursday night, when he struck out two in a perfect inning against Atlanta and reached 96 mph with his fastball.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein did not immediately respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment. Wagner is in the final season of a $43 million, four-year contract that includes a no-trade clause and an $8 million club option for 2010.

Once a waiver claim is awarded, the team with control of the player has two business days to work out a trade, pull the player back or let him go to the other club.

Greeneville 28, Jefferson County 3
Greeneville quarterback Wes Quarles threw two touchdown passes and the Greene Devils opened the regular season with a convincing win over Jefferson County on Friday night. Quarles was 6-of-8 passing for 163 yards and threw both TD passes to Rob Wright. Greeneville (1-0) led 14-0 after the first quarter.
