Chilhowie High School juniors Krystal Patton and Heather Hash noticed a big difference when basketball practice convened earlier this month at the Smyth County school.
Gone were the nine seniors who shined last season when the Warriors advanced to the semifinals of the VHSL Group A, Division 2 state tournament. Such mainstays as Emily Doane, Fallon Walker, Nikki Sage, Tenaicia Smith and Hillary Overbay all graduated in June.
Only three players from last season’s Hogoheegee District title team return to the court this winter: Hash, Patton and senior guard Ann Gollehon.
“It’s kind of hard,” Hash said. “But I think we’ll have a good team this year.”
Hash and Patton will certainly factor into any success the Warriors achieve this season. Both averaged nearly 10 points per game a year ago and played key roles during a deep postseason run.
Hash is a force in the post and blocked 36 shots last year, while Patton is known for her relentless defense and ability to drive to the basket.
With those skills also comes greater responsibility.
“We’re just trying to be leaders and help the upcoming juniors and sophomores,” Patton said.
Still, the experience of last season’s state tournament appearance is fresh in their minds.
“It was very exciting,” Patton said. “I knew we were going to be good, but we just worked together and played hard.”
