WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The University of Virginia’s College at Wise saw its playoff hopes come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 56-37 loss to the University of the Cumberlands.
Cumberlands (9-1) clinched the Mid-South Conference East Division title, while UVa.-Wise (7-3) lost for the second straight week.
Cumberlands’ running game shredded UVa.-Wise’s defense as the Patriots gained 396 yards on 59 carries. Cumberlands threw the ball just 11 times.
Quarterback Kyle King (10 carries, 108 yards) and Sean Mounts (11 carries, 106 yards) led the way for the Patriots and their option attack.
Quarterback Randy Hippeard had another big day for UVa.-Wise, but it wasn’t nearly enough. The senior completed 24-of-46 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns.
He threw two TD passes to Aric Evans, while Hakeem Abdul-Saboor and Jason Lovett also hauled in scoring receptions. Lovett returned to the UVa.-Wise lineup after missing the three previous games with an injury.
Matt Barbour caught seven passes for 117 yards, while Bristol native Brad Ricker had four receptions for 91 yards in a losing effort. Abdul-Saboor had 72 receiving yards and 66 rushing yards.
UVa.-Wise never led in the game. Cumberlands led 21-16 at halftime.
Former Virginia High standout Hunter Meade was a perfect 8-of-8 on extra point attempts for the Cumberlands.
UVa.-Wise closes out the season next week at home against Faulkner.
