Chilhowie High School’s baseball team opened the season by losing a sloppy slugfest to Marion. At one point, the Warriors record stood at 4-4.

Those days are just distant memories now for head coach Jeff Robinson.

The Hogoheegee District champions have won 13 of 14 games heading into today’s first-round Region C tournament game with Bath County.

Chilhowie (17-5) is coming off an impressive 2-0 win over George Wythe in the finals of the Hogoheegee District tournament. After beginning the season having to replace eight seniors, the newcomers have filled in admirably.

“We just kept working hard,” Robinson said. “A lot of these kids are first-year varsity players and it took a while for them to get used to the varsity level … They are playing well.”

The heroes have been numerous for Chilhowie. Aaron Clampitt has anchored the pitching staff, Cody Haga and Lucas Dowell provide solid defense in the outfield and Scott
Pennington, Marcus Little and Josh Jackson have sparked the Warriors at the plate.

Meanwhile, Hogoheegee District runner-up George Wythe travels to James River today for a first round regional tournament game.

REGION D
Four first round games are scheduled today in the Region D tournament and only one is a rematch of a regular-season matchup.

Honaker hosts J.I. Burton in the rematch of an April 24 game that Honaker won, 10-7. The game will also feature two of the area’s most successful coaches in J.I. Burton’s Mack
Shupe and Honaker’s Tom Harding.

Other first-round games today in the Region D tourney: Twin Springs at John Battle, Haysi at J.J. Kelly and Gate City at Cumberland District champion Castlewood.

REGION IV
Southwest Virginia’s only unbeaten team will host a quarterfinal game today as Richlands (22-0) entertains either Tazewell or Magna Vista.

Meanwhile, Abingdon will host River Ridge District member Salem in a quarterfinal game. Head coach Mark Francisco has led the Falcons to the Region IV tournament in each of his three seasons at the helm.
