HAYSI – Honaker’s baseball team completed an unbeaten run through the Black Diamond District Friday night with a 15-3, five-inning win over Haysi.
Fisher Wilson belted a two-run homer in a five-run second inning, followed by an eight-run fourth inning which was fueled by five Haysi errors.
Logan Ball worked four innings to pick up the win for Honaker (15-2, 8-0). Devin Edwards had an RBI single in the fourth for Haysi (10-7, 5-3).
Graham 5, Grundy 4
David Marrs doubled, tripled and scored three runs to lead Graham to a Southwest District win at Grundy.
Cody Billiter and Cody Cantrell each had two hits and an RBI for the Golden Wave (3-13, 0-10), which scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get a possible tying run aboard.
Castlewood 6, Coeburn 4
Ryan Phillips drove in three runs and Castlewood rallied from a 4-0 first inning deficit to pick up a Cumberland District home win over Coeburn.
Dylan Harding drove in two runs for the Blue Devils (10-6, 8-2), while Chris Smith (1-1) and Casey Phillips shut down the Blue Knights after the first inning. Phillips recorded his second save.
Brad Moore’s two-run single and Jonathan Dean’s two-run homer supplied Coeburn with its four-run lead.
Rye Cove 7, St. Paul 3
Blake Lawson’s two-run double keyed a four-run second inning that led Rye Cove to a Cumberland win at St. Paul.
Lawson, Will Earwood and Jarrid Hensley each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Eagles, while pitcher Chris Jones scattered seven hits to earn the win.
B.J. Crawford led the Deacons (7-11, 5-5) with two hits.
SOFTBALL
Patrick Henry 6, John Battle 1
Freshman Kelsey Weddle tossed a two-hitter, striking out seven, and also drove in two runs as Patrick Henry dumped visiting John Battle in a non-district game.
Heather Thomas and Shannon Kelly each added two hits and an RBI for the Rebels (14-3-1), which finished with 10 hits. Megan Haynes and Logan Moore each went 2-for-4 for PH.
Virginia High 4, Tazewell 0
Brittany Crusenberry’s solo homer got Virginia High going as it improved to 14-1 with a non-district shutout over visiting Tazewell.
Crusenberry added an RBI single in a two-run third for the Bearcats, while pitcher Lannie Johnston (9-1) worked a four-hitter, striking out four.
Holston 7, Rural Retreat 2
Stephanie Fritts struck out 12 en route to a three-hitter as Holston notched a Hogoheegee District win over visiting Rural Retreat.
Autumn Lyon had two hits for the Cavaliers (3-14, 2-5). The teams combined for seven hits and a whopping 13 errors, eight by the Indians.
Richlands 2, Carroll County 0
Lindsey Lester threw a five-hit shutout, fanning 10, as Richlands clinched a tie for the Southwest District title by edging visiting Carroll County.
Katie Lindsey’s RBI single in the fourth snapped a scoreless tie and Evan Ferrell’s triple an inning later gave Lester (12-1) insurance. The Cavaliers’ Rebecca Thomas allowed just five hits in suffering the tough-luck loss.
St. Paul 6, Rye Cove 5
Amanda Bradley’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Brittany Russell and Lindsey Hall, lifting St. Paul to a come-from-behind Cumberland win over visiting Rye Cove.
Bradley and Lindsey Dickenson each had two hits for the Deacons (6-12, 4-6), which trailed 5-2 entering their last at-bat. Tori McComas went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead the Eagles.
Twin Springs 11, Thomas Walker 8
Twin Springs pitcher Courtney Lell struck out 16 and also walked 16 in the Titans’ Cumberland win on Thursday. Dakota McCoy led Twin Springs (12-5, 8-1) with three hits. Emily Persinger had the lone hit for TW.
Virginia High 9, Gate City 1
Clinging to a 2-1 lead after six innings, Virginia High exploded for seven runs in the seventh of its Clinch Mountain District win Thursday at Gate City.
Lannie Johnston, who pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts to get the victory, cracked a two-run homer in the seventh. The Bearcats improved to 5-0 in the district.
