BRISTOL, Va. — An unlikely hero helped the Bristol White Sox continue their strong play on Wednesday night in a 5-4 Appalachian League victory over the Kingsport Mets at DeVault Stadium.

Designated hitter Kenneth Gilbert drove in two runs to key the win for Bristol (5-3) and help the Sox take two of three from their West Division rivals.

Gilbert hit a RBI double to key Bristol’s three-run second inning and then drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning to increase the lead. Gilbert, a Texas native, had been 0-for-8 in his two previous appearances for Bristol.

Shortstop Juan Silverio continued his torrid hitting with two hits for the BriSox, while Brandon Short also ripped a pair of hits in the victory.

Bristol also got another strong pitching performance. Starter Joucer Martinez allowed just two earned runs in five innings of work to notch the win.

Relievers Brett Graffy, Chad Dawson and Brent DeFoor combined to polish off the victory. DeFoord worked around a run in the final 1 1/3 innings to notch his first save.

Kingsport received two hits apiece from Wilmer Flores and Stefan Welch.
