GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Bristol White Sox outfielder Jordan Kendall went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and spearheaded an offense that pounded out 15 hits in an 11-4 Appalachian League road victory over the Greeneville Astros on Sunday night.
Kendall tripled in the first inning and connected for a RBI single during Bristol’s four-run fifth inning. The California native raised his batting average to .333.
Justin Greene, Jorge Castillo and Hancer Vargas added two hits apiece for Bristol, while Brandon Short, Castillo and Vargas each knocked in two runs.
Bristol actually trailed 3-0, before putting the game away in the middle innings.
The Sox also got an impressive pitching performance from reliever Steven Upchurch. Upchurch (1-0, 3.38 ERA) took over for struggling starter Garrett Johnson in the second inning and yielded just two hits and struck out seven in 4 1/3 shutout innings of work.
Johnson, a 6-foot-10 left-hander, had his worst outing of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings, but was let off the hook by Upchurch and the bullpen.
Brett Graffy tossed the final three innings for his first save.
Greeneville starting pitcher Luis Cruz left in the third inning with an arm injury and the Astros bullpen subsequently fell apart. Wander Alvino (1-4, 7.13 ERA) was charged with the loss as his struggles continued.
Jorge De Leon had three hits to pace Greeneville. The teams play again tonight.
