BRISTOL, Va. — Leadoff hitter Jordan Kendall went 2-for-5 and drove in a run, but it wasn’t enough as the Bristol White Sox suffered a 7-3 Appalachian League loss to the Greeneville Astros on Saturday night at DeVault Stadium.
After getting two consecutive strong outings from Onarkys Paniagua and Po-Yu Lin, Bristol starter Joucer Martinez failed to make it out of the fifth inning on Saturday.
Martinez (2-2, 3.82 ERA) allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and allowed a solo home run to Renzo Tello in the top of the first inning.
However, Bristol manager Bobby Thigpen didn’t have to exhaust his bullpen. Murillo Gouvea tossed the final 4 1/3 innings and yielded three runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Kendall was once again a bright spot for the BriSox (16-17) as he tripled and raised his batting average to .324. First baseman Jorge Castillo and second baseman Andrew Garcia drove in Bristol’s other two runs.
Devon Torrence and Jose Altuve each had two hits to lead Greeneville. Jose Trinidad (2-2, 3.00 ERA) was the winning pitcher for the Astros and allowed one run on five hits in six innings, while walking one and striking out four.
Brian Wabick worked the final three innings for his fifth save.
The teams will meet again tonight.
