The U.S. Military Academy made a change to its policy regarding West Point graduates competing in professional sports late Wednesday and the ruling affects a local athlete.

Former Sullivan East High School star Nick Hill is currently in his second season as a pitcher in the Seattle Mariners’ minor league system and according to the Associated Press will be allowed to finish his season before reporting to an Army unit.

It’s unclear if Hill will have to serve his full two years – since he already took part in officer training activities following the 2007 season – and he did not immediately return a call to the Bristol Herald Courier on Thursday afternoon.

Hill is 1-7 with a 5.31 ERA in 30 games (10 starts) between High Class A High Desert and Class AA West Tennessee this season. He was a seventh-round pick in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft and emerged as one of the Mariners' top pitching prospects last summer.

Check back later for more details.
