This weeks Male Embarq Scholar Athlete of the Week is J.I. Burton senior quarterback Ethan Stewart. Stewart has led the Raiders to back to back state championship finals. He's an all-state selection and the 2006 Lonesome Pine offensive player of the year. In addition to football, Stewart is also an all every-thing catcher for the baseball team; he also plays basketball and track. "You can transpose the work ethic and discipline that you learn like getting up early for football practice in the summer, you can take that and apply that towards school. It helps you leaps and bounds." said Stewart.
Stewart is an active member of his community volunteering some of his spare time with area youth. He's comfortable in the classroom where he owns a 4.078 grade point average. He plans to attend a major university and perhaps play either football or baseball. He's considering a career as a physical therapist. "My parents have always stressed the important of getting an education and continuing on into college. Even the coaches and faculty stress academics before athletics."
This week's female Embarq Scholar Athlete of the week is J.J. Kelly senior multi-sport star Kalen Collins. In addition to basketball, Collins is a stand out on the volleyball court; she became the first player in J.J. Kelly history to reach the 1000 kill plateau. She also plays softball for the Lady Indians. "I stay in athletics because I started when I was four. My parents have kept me in it. I would like to repay them by getting a full ride." Said Collins.
She credits her parents for her success in the classroom. She owns a 3.68 grade point average. She's also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and the Executive Secretary of the Student Council. "I always have like a schedule. It's been the same routine for the last five years. It's pretty normal."
Congratulations to Ethan Stewart and Kalen Collins. This week's Embarq Scholar Athletes of the Week.
