This week's male Embarq Scholar Athlete of the Week is Dobyns-Bennett senior Lane Dukart. One of the top students in the school, Dukart owns a 3.9 grade point average even while taking honors classes. He's a member of the National Honor Society, he's 1 of 7 Dobyns-Bennett students to qualify for National Merit Scholar and is an active member of his church. "I always put as much as I can into everything I do. I hate doing stuff just a little bit. Not doing it full speed."
It seems speed is the only thing Dukart knows. He's one of the fastest athletes in the area finishing 5th and 8th in the state track meet. He's the Indians top scorer this year. He returned kicks for touchdowns the first two weeks of the season, and he had a 94 yard interception return last week. "I can't even usually look at my school work until at least 7:00 or 8:00 then I do as much as I can. You have to make some sacrifices in both. You have to balance it out."
This week's female Embarq Scholar Athlete of the week is Science Hill senior volleyball player Sydney Rice. Rice has helped lead the Lady Toppers to their first ever state meet. She's been playing volleyball for 6 years. " My dad played volleyball and he always said you have to play volleyball, he said it was a fun sport. It just became something I did."
Family has also molded Rice into a well rounded student. She says she enjoys art classes, but her favorite courses include math and science. She's a member of Beta Club at Science Hil she is also active in her church. "I just make sure I get all my homework done on time. Homework helps me study, if I do my homework then I know what I'm doing."
Congratulations to Lane Dukart and Sydney Rice. This week's Embarq Scholar Athletes of the week.
