Tax season is upon us and institutions have until tomorrow to send out your tax information. Once you’ve gathered all of your tax documents, a local agency is offering to file your taxes for free.
A team of licensed volunteers from Milligan College and Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation will be on hand for free tax preparation. The tax preparation workshops will be held on Monday nights now through April 16 at Eastern Eight, 214 East Watauga Avenue in Johnson City.
Families making less than $60,000 a year qualify for the service. Make sure to bring your W-2’s, income statements, last year’s return if you have it, and any other tax documents you received this year.
Tax returns will be prepared and e-filed, or mailed, for free. Refunds are expected in less than two weeks.
This service is funded partially through a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grant from the Internal Revenue Service. Milligan’s VITA program successfully prepared more than 300 returns during the 2010 tax season.
You may call for an appointment at 232-2040 or 773-6438.
Other locations and times for free tax preparation are available throughout Johnson City, Washington County and Elizabethton. For a complete list, see the box to the right.
