A Chilhowie, Va., man died Wednesday evening after his pickup truck ran off Interstate 81 and into a tree, state police said.
Joel Andrew Williams, 40, was traveling northbound on 81 when his truck veered off the road and “went head on into a tree” around 6:15 p.m., said Virginia State Police Trooper Pat Lower.
Williams was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead 45 minutes after the crash, Lower said.
No other drivers were involved in the wreck, and the cause of the crash was undetermined late Wednesday night. The incident remains under investigation.
The left lane of traffic was blocked for several hours near the scene of the wreck at mile marker 20.5, as police investigated the wreck, Lower said.
