The renovated Science Center at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise has a new name.
The newly christened Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center is named after the University of Virginia’s former chief operating officer and a longtime supporter of the college, Leonard Sandridge.
Sandridge’s name was recommended to the UVa-Wise board by Chancellor David Prior, and the new name was approved Dec. 9, according to a written statement from the college.
Prior said that Sandridge was a “valued adviser” to him and someone who has offered “invaluable” guidance and support to the college.
“Leonard Sandridge has been a staunch supporter of the College at Wise for many years,” Prior said. “He fully understands and appreciates our special mission in Southwest Virginia.”
Sandridge retired from UVa in July, but remains a special adviser to the university’s president, Teresa Sullivan. He was employed by the university for 44 years, and worked his way up from working on the university’s internal audit to executive vice president and chief operating officer.
“It is a huge honor to be recognized in this way by my friends at [UVa-Wise],” Sandridge said in the statement. “I have always admired the work that is done at the college and have enjoyed being a small part of what has been accomplished over the last several decades.”
The building’s $13.4 million renovation created a new wing and provided laboratory spaces for classes, according to the statement. In 2011, the building was awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest designation for sustainable design, the LEED Platinum certification.
