Afton, Tenn. man arrested for shoplifting at Belk

On Saturday, Jan. 7 officers of the Johnson City Police Department arrested Jason L. Smith, 26, of Afton, Tenn. 

The arrest was the result of a shoplifting investigation that occurred at the Belk Men’s store at 2011 N Roan St.  Officers responded to the business after store security reported Smith was concealing merchandise inside of a shopping bag.  Further investigation revealed Smith had damaged several pieces of clothing by removing anti-theft devices from the merchandise with a pair of pliers. 

Smith was apprehended by store loss prevention as he attempted to leave the business without making payment for the merchandise. 

Smith was found to have concealed and damaged $560 worth of store merchandise.  Smith was taken into custody and charged with felony shoplifting and felony vandalism. 

Smith was transported to the Washington County Detention Center and held with a $15,000 bond.  Smith has a preliminary court date set for Monday, Jan. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Washington County Sessions Court.
