Homeowners warned of paving scam in region

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Homeowners are being warned of an on-going paving scam in the Johnson City area.

According to the Johnson City Police Department the scam has been going on in the areas of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina for some time now and has shown up in Johnson City before.

The scam begins when home owners are approached, or called, by worker(s) of what appears to be a legitimate paving company.  The home owners are told something to the effect that the paving company has extra pavement left over from a job and would like to know if the home owners would like pot holes or dents in the driveway repaired.  A reasonable price is agreed upon to have the potholes patched.  While the home owner is either away or busy, the paving company begins to pave the entire driveway and attempts to bill the home owner for an excessive amount, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars.  These types of scams seem to particularly target the elderly and intimidation or threats are sometimes used to collect money from victims.

Police are reminding people that reputable paving businesses rarely solicit business by calling or walking door-to-door.

If a you should come in contact with someone they believe to be operating a scam, please call  911.
