A Kingsport man has been charged with attempted first degree murder after police say he attempted to stab his ex-girlfriend.

According to the Kingsport Police Department, officers responded to 2276 Timbers Edge Terrace at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday because they heard a woman screaming for help.

When they arrived, officers report they found the victim crying. She told them her ex-boyfriend, Ernest Brewer, Jr. assaulted her by punching her and choking her. He then grabbed a large kitchen knife and attempted to stab her, she reported. The victim stated she was able to block the knife with her hands.

The woman did suffer cuts to her hands.

When officers arrived, Brewer had reportedly hidden in the attic. Reports state he resisted arrest, causing officers to use their tasers to subdue him.

Brewer, who had been recently released from jail on prior domestic assault charges, was taken into custody and charged with domestic assault and attempted first degree murder.
