It is simply amazing the amount of hypocrisy that Cal Thomas is able to incorporate into the content of his articles. A prime example of such is the one he authored relating to the so called ‘social gospel’ of our president.
For beginners, is not the scripture that President Obama quoted regarding ‘the demand for those with much to give much in return’ not applicable, or does he think Jesus Christ was only joking when he said it? When Cal accuses the president of trying to spin scripture in order to score political points, I would remind him that no one has mastered the art of spinning and injecting religion into politics more than conservatives. The fact is, they thrive on it.
And why does Cal think being responsible to God does not imply also being responsible to humankind, whether it be through charities, the church, or through government agencies designed to help those in need? It is naive to suggest the religious community or individuals will step up and be there for all who may need help. For sure there will be some who abuse the system but that does not mean we are turning into a welfare state.
Finally, he states the social gospel is a creation of 20th century Protestants who believed in applying ‘Christian principles’ to rectify society’s problems. Well, duh! Why did Christ tell his disciples to pray for ‘the Kingdom to come on Earth, as it is in Heaven’ if the Christian community was not going to accentuate positive change to bring about a better world? To suggest otherwise is a real contradiction of biblical teaching and Cal Thomas should know better.
