UPDATE: 4:45 p.m.

The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Billy Scalf.

-----

Rescue workers pulled the body of a Kingsport man out of the North Fork of the Holston River shortly after 9:30 Friday morning.

Police got a call around 10:30 p.m. Thursday of a man in the river, screaming for help.

Police officers spotted the man in the river shortly after the call, but say the man went under the water before they could reach him.

Crews searched into the early morning hours for the man, until heavy fog caused them to call of the search until daylight. Kingsport Police, EMS and Kingsport Fire Department were all on the scene this morning when the man was found in the middle of the river, near the intersection of Netherland Inn Road and Big Elm Rd.

Cpl. Detective Frank Light says the man did have identification on him, but his name will not be released until next of kin is notified.

Light said a drowning this time of year is very unusual.

"It's really unusual to have somebody in the river at 10:30 at night," said Light.  "It was fairly cold last night.  We don't know what the reasons are yet, but hopefully once we locate the family and talk to them.  Maybe we'll make some determination as to why he was."

Light says they saw no signs of trauma, but the body will be sent to the Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.
