The date has been set for a special election to fill a vacancy on the Washington County Board of Supervisors.
According to the writ of special election from the Washington County Circuit Court, the election is to be held with the general election Nov. 6.
The person elected will finish the term of Nicole Price, who resigned from the board after being elected commonwealth’s attorney. She represented the Jefferson District, which covers the rural northwest section of the county, and her term runs through the end of 2013.
In the interim between her resignation and the special election, the Board of Supervisors appointed Randy Pennington, a local business owner, to serve on the board. He was one of seven who sought the interim appointment – a number that seemed to surprise everyone in a large district where there hasn’t historically been a large turnout to run for office.
Pennington and at least three of the others said during the selection process they intend to run in the special election.
County Voter Registrar Mary Ann Compton said no one has filed paperwork to run yet, but the deadline isn’t until 5 p.m. Aug. 17.
Each candidate must file the relevant paperwork and either receive a party nomination or collect 125 signatures from registered voters in the district.
