Students from Dobyns-Bennett High School were first place winners in today’s sixth annual Northeast Tennessee Science Bowl held at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center in Kingsport. The winning team received a $300 cash prize and plaque.
The event, sponsored by Holston Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Eastman Chemical Company, American Institute of Chemical Engineers East Tennessee Local Section, and BAE Systems, brought together teams from Cherokee High School, Daniel Boone High School, Dobyns-Bennett High School, Greeneville High School, Jefferson County High School, Science Hill High School, Sullivan Central High School, Sullivan South High School and Tennessee High School.
Second place was awarded to Daniel Boone High School team. They took home a $200 cash prize and plaque. Jefferson County High School team took third place and a $100 cash prize and plaque.
Teams consisted of students from grades 10 through 12. Questions covered astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, general science and mathematics. The purpose of the event was to prepare students in this region for state and national Science Bowl competitions.
All of the regional teams competing in the Science Bowl are eligible to compete in the state competition scheduled for March 3, 2012 at Pellissippi State Community College Blount County campus, Friendsville, TN. The winning team from Tennessee will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® in Washington, DC.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched the National Science Bowl competition in 1991 to help develop the workforce that America requires to remain at the forefront of scientific advances, technological innovation and economic competitiveness. Since the National Science Bowl® started in 1991; more than 160,000 students from all over the country have taken part in the fast-paced, question and answer tournament. Each year the number of regional competitions continues to grow.
