A trip through Tennessee’s oldest town could take you a little longer than normal.
Work crews are installing new electric and water lines on Main St. in Jonesborough. Cast iron water pipes and electrical lines from the 1970's are being upgraded during the project.
One store employee said that since the utility construction began business has decreased. Work crews are working on one section of Main St. at a time so that traffic can be routed around work areas.
Sidewalks for the most part have been kept clear for pedestrians so that merchants and customers can get to shops along Main St. Still merchants here said that business has suffered while the construction continues, but its something they have to deal with to make things better.
A workman I spoke with today said that work crews have been given up to nine months to complete this project.
If it does end up taking nine months to finish the upgrade I could end up affecting festivals like Jonesborough Days and the Storytelling Festival. The merchants I spoke with today says that could be devastating to their business, but most of them were optimistic that the project would be completed long before that could happen.
