Barter Theatre founder's widow passes away

Mary Dudley Porterfield, the widow of Barter Theatre Founder Robert Porterfield, has died.

Described in her obituary as “a proud and grand lady,” she worked as a model in New York when she was young, before marrying Charles Vance, of Abingdon. After his death in 1963, she married Robert Porterfield, who died in 1971.

According to the obituary, “Her determination and true grit were evident, making her an inspiration to all who knew her. She loved her family of friends without reserve and will be greatly missed by all.”

She was 90 and is survived by a son, grandson and two great-grandchildren, among other relatives.
