Postal workers in the Tri-Cities are rallying tonight in an effort to save jobs and the post offices that serve as community centers.
The "Save America's Postal Service" rally is going on tonight and members of the local postal workers union and others in the community are joining together to ask for help.
As we told you last night, the union wants Congressman Phil Roe to support House Bill 13 - 51.
The bill would allow postal workers to take $75B they've saved that exceeds retirement needs and use that money to get the Post Office financially back on track.
It's also asking Congress to do away with a law requiring postal workers to pre-fund their health care benefits. The union says that requirement is costing the postal service $5.5 billion a year.
And no other government-affiliated agency is required to do that.
The reason for the request: the USPS is looking at closing more than 3,600 offices, branches and stations across the country.. Some of those right here in our region.
We’ll have more, live from the rally tonight at 5 p.m.
