BRISTOL, Va. — A Glade Spring family that lost its home during the April tornado is having the house rebuilt through a joint effort by Washington County, Va., Habitat for Humanity, Alpha Natural Resources and other groups.
Mike and Kara Johnson have been without their home since the April 28 storms destroyed it, but work began several days ago to rebuild it.
In addition to Habitat of Humanity and Alpha Natural Resources, the United Way of Russell and Washington Counties, the “No Place Like Home” organization and the Washington County Long Term Recovery Group are also providing financial assistance or volunteers towards the construction project.
Alpha Natural Resources, one of the region’s largest coal companies, is providing through a week of community service some employee-volunteers as part of its effort to honor victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The groups working on the Johnson project will hold a news conference at the construction site today.
Under the Habitat for Humanity program, donated materials and volunteer work are combined to build homes, which are then made available to homeowners for no profit.
The homeowners must devote hundreds of hours towards helping to build the home – and otherwise be involved in helping the construction project succeed.
Chris Robinson, president of Habitat’s Washington County, Va., chapter, could not be reached for comment.
