A 58-year-old Castlewood man is hospitalized but in stable condition after he was shot outside his home Monday, according to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Bill Watson said the call came in at 11:23 a.m. that the man, whose name he would not confirm, was shot through the chest.
“At this point all we know is he stepped out of his house onto his carport, heard a gunshot and was struck in the chest area,” Watson said.
It happened in a subdivision adjacent to State Route 65, not far from Alt. U.S. Highway 58, the main east-west highway across Russell County.
While the incident is being investigated as a crime, Watson said investigators are still searching for the bullet that struck the man and don’t know the caliber of the weapon.
“It appears it didn’t’ hit anything vital that would’ve put him in immediate danger [of death],” Watson said.
“We’re glad that he’s all right. The main thing is he’s in stable condition at this point.”
He said the shooting could be any one of “a million different scenarios” – including a hunting accident, a stray bullet from target practice nearby or the highway.
“We don’t know…if it was intentional or not intentional,” he said.
Watson said the schools nearby were on lockdown for part of the day as a precaution, but the children were sent home at the normal time Monday afternoon.
