Emory and Henry College graduates 200 at commencement

Emory & Henry College graduated some 200 students Saturday, May 7, during commencement exercises held on the south lawn of the E&H Memorial Chapel. The class of 2011 included 164 graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees and 30 graduates receiving master’s degrees. The speaker for this year’s event was best-selling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver.

Among the graduates are the following:

Carlie Fogleman – Fogleman was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History. She is a resident of Lebanon, Va., graduate of Lebanon High School, and the daughter of Donna and Ronald Fogleman.  She has been accepted into the Ph.D. program in Political Science at Texas A&M University. Fogleman served an internship under Judge Elizabeth A. McClanahan, Virginia Court of Appeals.

Katye Austin Blankenship  – Blankenship was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.  She is a resident of Lebanon, Va., graduate of Lebanon High School, and the daughter of Regina Stamper and Boo Stamper, and Jimmy Blankenship. She is a member of the Bonner Scholar program and Math Club. Blankenship plans to eventually become a teacher.

Tollisa Deann Thompson – Thompson was awarded a master’s degree in Education.  Thompson is a resident of Oakwood, Va., graduate of Twin Valley High School, and the child of Patsy Ann and Dean Thompson.  

 

James Allen Cornett – Cornett was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. He is a resident of Damascus, Va., graduate of Holston High School, and the son of Lois and Mike Cornett.  He is a member of the Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society and Gamma Theta Upsilon Geography Honor Society. Cornett completed an internship with the Department of Environmental Quality in Abingdon this past fall.

Adelaide Clark –  Clark was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.  She is a resident of Abingdon, Va., graduate of Abingdon High School, and the daughter of Angela and Don Clark. She was the copy Editor for the college’s newspaper, a member of the Dean’s List, and served as a Head Residential Advisor.

LeeAnne M. Reese – Reese was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Music Education.  She is a resident of Glade Spring, Va., graduate of Holston High School, and the daughter of Nancy and Keith Reese.  She was a member of the Emory & Henry Trumpet Ensemble, Stadium Band, and Brass Ensemble. She was selected to the Dean’s List for all four-years of her time at Emory & Henry. Reese was a student teacher at E.B. Stanley Middle School and Meadowview Elementary and hopes to one day teach in middle school or high school band.

Ashley Meaghan McNew – McNew was awarded a bachelor’s degree in History.  She is a resident of Bristol, Va., graduate of Northwood High School, and the daughter of Melinda and Ronald McNew.  She split much of her time serving as Head Cheerleading Coach for Northwood High School and Emory & Henry College. McNew volunteered with the Lunch Buddy and Tutoring program through the Appalachian Center.

Rachel N. Blevins – Blevins was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science.  She is a resident of Saltville, Va., graduate of Holston High School, and the daughter of Debra and Curtis Blevins.  In the summer of 2010, Blevins served an internship with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. She was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon Geography Honor Society and the Garden Leadership Team. Blevins graduated Cum Laude.

Savanna Dean – Dean was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Religion and Mass Communications.  She is a resident of Marion, Va., graduate of Marion Senior High School, and the daughter of Linda and Tim Dean.  She served as President of the Campus Christian Fellowship Organization, Sigma Mu Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Fraternity, and Cardinal Key service organization. Dean was a four-year member of the Dean’s List, and was selected the 2010 Outstanding Religion Major. She will be attending the Duke Divinity School.

Robert Keith Fenner II – Fenner was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Education.  He is a resident of Chilhowie, Va., graduate of Chilhowie High School, and the son of Carol and Robbie Fenner.  He was a member of the baseball team and the Phi Gamma Phi social fraternity. Fenner will spend the summer pitching for the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League.

Jared Pierce – Pierce was awarded a bachelor’s degree in History and Geography Education.  He is a resident of Chilhowie, Va., graduate of Chilhowie High School, and the son of Elizabeth and Jonathan Pierce.  He was a member of the baseball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Gamma Theta Upsilon Geography Honor Society. Pierce served an internship with Patrick Henry High School teaching senior government, and he hopes to teach social studies.

Shane M. Goodpasture – Goodpasture was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with an emphasis on teacher preparation.  He is a resident of Chilhowie, Va., graduate of Marion High Senior High School, and the son of Vicky Salter and Randy Goodpasture.  He worked with the Peer Education S.T.I.N.G.E.R.S. Program, served as advisor for the Residence Hall Association, and was a member of the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Fraternity. Beginning in August 2011, Goodpasture will begin teaching Spanish in Scott Co., Va. at Gate City Middle/High School.

Christopher Nathan Grinstead – Grinstead was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environmental Science.  He is a resident of Chilhowie, Va., graduate of Chilhowie High School, and the son of Joy Pannell and Tim Grinstead.  He was a member of Emory and Henry Concert Choir (Tenor), Chamber Singers, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, and Gamma Theta Upsilon Geography Honor Society. Grinstead will be attending East Tennessee State University to pursue his master’s in Public Administration with a concentration in Planning and Economic Development.

Sarah Dawn Sturgill – Sturgill was awarded a master’s degree in Education.  She is a resident of Chilhowie, Va., graduate of Chilhowie High School, and the daughter of Mary Lynne Gross and Randy Sturgill.  She graduated Suma Cum Laude. Sturgill served an internship teaching kindergarten at Rich Valley Elementary School and Saltville Elementary School. She was a member of the Dean’s List, President’s List, and Cardinal Key National Honor Sorority.

Caroline Mitchell – Mitchell was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.  She is a resident of Bristol, Va., graduate of Virginia High School, and the daughter of Lisa and Dough Mitchell.  

Samantha Jones – Jones was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.  She is a resident of Bristol, Va., graduate of Virginia High School, and the daughter of Mary Ann and Sam Jones.  She was selected a Who's Who Among American College Students for 2010. Jones was a Bonner Scholar, member of the American Chemical Society, Residential Advisor program, E&H tutoring, and Cardinal Key Honor Sorority.

Dana Marie Napier – Napier was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy & Community Service and Sociology.  She is a resident of Damascus, Va., graduate of Holston High School, and the daughter of Lisa Salmons and David Napier.  She was a member of the Bonner Scholars, Alpha Phi Omega, and Pi Sigma Kappa social sorority. Napier spent last fall interning with People Incorporated.

Krista Haynes Kimberlin – Kimberlin was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education (k-12) with an endorsement in Drivers Education.  She is a resident of Lee County, Va., graduate of Lee County High School, and the daughter of Jackie Haynes and the late John Haynes.  She was a Bonner Scholar and volunteered over 1,000 hours of community service at the local Boys and Girls clubs.

Kristy Michelle Brooking – Brooking was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Geography.  She is a resident of Ewing, Va., graduate of Thomas Walker High School, and the daughter of Pauline and Charlie Brooking.  She was active in the E&H Tutoring program and the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Brooking served an internship at Appalachian Sustainable Development Internship at The Upper Tennessee River Roundtable.
