East Tennessee State University has established a Web site that provides information on ways support may be extended to the people of Washington and Greene counties who were affected by the April 27 storms that produced heavy hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.
This site, www.etsu.edu/response, encourages visitors to assist in several ways.
A number of ETSU families were affected by the storms, and the university’s Staff Senate is seeking contributions to assist these families. All donations will be equally divided among the families.
The American Red Cross is also accepting donations that may be designated to remain in the Greene County and/or Washington County areas.
In addition, the Emergency Management Agency of Greeneville and Greene County and Harris Memorial Rural Baptist Church are accepting donations for Greene County storm victims, and Freewill Baptist Family Ministries Children’s home, located near Camp Creek Elementary School, is taking donations of various emergency supplies.
Contact information for all these agencies is available on the ETSU Response Web site, along with a listing of the emergency supplies that are needed.
The site also provides information on campus support services for students, faculty and staff who may have been affected by the disaster.
Student organizations wishing to conduct fundraisers or other relief efforts are referred to ETSU’s Community Service Programs in the Student Organization Resource Center, and the Web site may be updated as information on such opportunities becomes available.
The ETSU disaster response Web page was first created after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and was activated again following the floods in Middle Tennessee last spring and the fire at Johnson City’s Miller Crest Apartments last August. It was used most recently in March in response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
