Marsh Blood Center warns about low supplies

BRISTOL HERALD COURIER

Faced with a dwindling supply at a time of high demand, one of the Tri-Cities busiest blood donation programs is issuing an urgent call for help – especially from people who have A-positive, A-negative, O-positive, and O-negative blood.

In a statement issued Thursday, Marsh Regional Blood Center Director David Campbell said he’s seen a recent decrease in donations because people have been going on vacation during the summer holiday season and his operation can no longer benefit from the school-sponsored blood drives.

Campbell said he’s also seen a 47 percent increase in the demand for donated blood as more and more people are taking part in activities that have a potential for serious injury and may require a blood transfusion.

“We just wanted everyone to know that that combination has led to a major need for blood right now,” Campbell said in his statement as he pleaded with the public to come forward and donate blood. He also reminded people that one pint of donated blood can save three lives.

People interested in giving blood need to be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 120 pounds and be in good health. They can make a donation at one of Marsh Regional’s three centers, located at 102 E. Ravine Road in Kingsport, 1996 W. State Street in Bristol, Tenn., and 1 Professional Park Boulevard in Johnson City

They can also stop by one of the following blood drives that businesses and community groups are organizing across the region over the coming week. Those events include blood drives Marsh Regional is holding:
